In 2013 Weyforward founder Jason West tried to persuade the old Weymouth & Portland Borough Council to build something useful, cool and sustainable on Weymouth peninsula (the car park behind the Pavilion theatre between the harbour and the beach). Something exciting which served both the local community and visitors and made Weymouth stand out even more. He brought one of the UK's top architects and a global sustainable developer to meet the council. They had a plan which involved asking the local people to guide the process and included a lifetime revenue stream for the council. They even said they could raise the money, around £150m. The council listened and then said they liked the idea but were going to develop the whole of Weymouth with a grand master plan and that the peninsula was just one element. They also said they were going to do it all in-house. Unfortunately since then very little has happened to regenerate Weymouth & Portland. So Jason joined with his good friend Baron Miles to create a Facebook page that would promote cool and useful ideas from other places in the world that they felt could be applied to where they lived, Weymouth & Portland. The thought was "If they can do it there...why not here?". The page grew and its positivity spread, and out of that, over the years, projects and initiatives designed to improve the lot of local people and regenerate Weymouth & Portland in a sustainable and fun way have periodically blossomed. The Circular Shop came out of The Ideas League and Weyforward CIC hiring six young people on the UK government's Kickstart programme coming out of the pandemic lockdown.
